My name is David K Baker, and diamonds are simply my life. They say that you should find your passion first and your job second, and that is what I have done. My interest in diamonds began many years ago when visiting Goa on holiday. Inevitably I visited a number of jewellers and diamond traders there and fell in love…..with diamonds! I knew then that this was what I wanted to do – work in the diamond industry.
My first uneducated purchase of two diamond rings was almost a disaster. Of course the stones I had been sold looked fabulous but in reality were poor quality and badly cut, but I learnt my lesson. I began to learn about diamonds from every possible source, thirsty for knowledge and completely captivated by what I learnt.
I enrolled at the GIA in London and eventually achieved my AJP Diploma as an Accredited Jewellery Professional. I then got the chance of a lifetime to understudy the worlds #1 diamond advisor, ‘The Diamond Guy®’ himself, Fred Cuellar, at Diamond Cutters International in Houston, Texas. This celebrity jeweller includes among his many clients President Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Hugh Hefner, Tyra Banks, members of the Saudi Royal family, David Beckham plus hundreds of athletes & sports stars. He is truly one of life’s kindest and most generous souls, and the knowledge and experience he gave me are something I will never forget and can never repay. The name of my company, ‘River Oak Diamonds’ is actually named after a beautiful area in Houston, River Oaks, that I fell in love with during my time there. On returning to the UK my own diamond business was born and appropriately was named after it.
